Our
Story
Our
story goes back years. Steve was raised in the Monroe Falls area,
and I (Kristen) was raised in Rootstown. Both towns in Ohio.
When
Steve was a child he loved to be in the garden with his grandmother.
She had a big garden, and he was drawn to the idea of it. He liked
being outside and he liked getting his hands dirty and he really enjoyed watching the veggies
grow and eating things from the garden. And now that he
looks back on it, it was stolen moments with her, that as they say,
are the times of your life.
She
was a great cook too. And as he got older, he really paid attention
to how she did things in the kitchen, especially when it came to canning.
As
an adult, he had his own gardens, sometimes really small, sometimes
they were bigger. It didn't really matter to him, he was outside,
getting his hands dirty, getting to eat and share the fruits of
his labor. But most of all it always brought back memories of the
times in the garden with his grandmother.

He
carried on what he had learned from her, adding his own twist on
things here and there. He started canning peppers in his early twenties.
He did it just for family and friends. And when canning season was
over, friends came out of the woodwork for his famous peppers.
When
Steve and I meet, on one of our earliest dates, Steve's daughter,my
two sons,Steve and I......canned peppers. Just think about
three kids, six, seven and eight, canning peppers. but you know,
it went great! It was right then and there that I got a clear
view on how great the peppers were. It was only a short time before my friends and family started
asking him for them.

It
had been a big secret dream of his to maybe, someday, try and put
these on the market. My wheels were turning. One day I asked
him if he had ever wanted to do more with the peppers. I reminded
him that after all, you only live once. If you don't try , and
someday, the grandkids ask you, why you didn't try,
what are you going to say? You were afraid. No, we decided. we were
going to give everything we had. Life is short, if your passionate,
and determined, you have to try.
The
Stevereno's name came from Steve's friends at work. As soon as he walked in the door, the guys
would yell down and ask if he had any STEVERENO'S. The name just
kind of stuck.

Nine
years later, the kids still help. Anywhere they are needed. They
fight with each other now, but they grew up on my family farm.
And although, my father can no longer farm, due to MS, he and my
mother have donated land on the farm for Steve and I to plant,
their life time memories. My mother also helps in the field, picking
and in the canning process. This really is a family effort. My Aunts
help. Steve's friends from work help. The children's
childhood friends, also come out to help.
Steve
and I have learned alot in the first couple years, and have a lot
more to learn. The one thing we are quite sure of is, that we are
passionate about Stevereno's Peppers. |
